At least three people were injured on Tuesday in a shooting at a college in Houston, the authorities said. At least one suspect was in custody.
Officials at the north Harris County campus of Lone Star College issued an alert shortly before 1 p.m. asking students and faculty to “take immediate shelter where you are.”
Live video from the scene showed emergency responders at the campus. At 1:08, the college posted this alert: “LSC-North Harris campus evacuation is in progress. A couple of armed suspects reported; injuries reported."
The campus, at 2700 West W. Thorne Drive, near George Bush International Airport, is about 20 miles north of downtown Houston.
Three people were injured during a shooting on the campus of Lone Star College in Houston, Texas, this afternoon, causing the school to be locked down and evacuated while police searched for a suspect.
Police officials who spoke on campus at 3 p.m. today said that shots were fired on the campus and at least three people were injured.
"A person of interest has been detained," said Major Armando Tello of the Harris County Sherrif's Department.
Tello described the situation as "ongoing."
Two individuals with multiple gunshot wounds are in serious condition at Ben Taub Hospital, according to ABC News affiliate KTRK.
Emergency reponders are currently on campus.
Police were searching for a man described as 6-foot-2 and wearing a Atlanta Falcons cap, KTRK reported.
A statement on the school's website advised students and faculty to "shelter in place" wherever they are on campus. It gave no details of the shooting situation.
The shooting comes only a month after the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 students and six staff members were shot, sparking a wave of attempted copycat crimes in states like California and Indiana.
The Connecticut shooting inspired calls from government officials including President Obama for stricter gun control laws.
Update: Sources in Houston say Lone Star College shooting began when two individuals started firing at each other
Update at 2:12 p.m.: This just in from CNN, which is reporting that “someone — a fourth person — suffered a heart attack, according to a federal law enforcement source who is receiving reports from the scene.”
Meanwhile, Lone Star College’s spokesman reiterates: The second gunman is not believed to be on campus. And sources continue to reiterate: This appears to be an altercation between two people, and the two injured were caught in the crossfire.
Update at 2:03 p.m.: The media update left more questions than it did offer answers, as Major Armando Tello, a Harris County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson, said only that this was “an ongoing situation” and, as a result, “We can’t give further details.” All he said was what we already knew: Three people have been injured, and that “we also have a person of interest that’s being detained at this time.” But he didn’t say if one of the injured was one of the two shooting suspects.
And a spokesman for the college only said that “the campus is obviously closed.”
Various media outlets keep reporting, without verification, that the first shooter was “a disgruntled student.”
Another press conference is scheduled at 4 p.m.
Update at 1:54 p.m.: A press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. But Christina Garza, a Harris County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson, just told KHOU-TV that that the situation is “still volatile” and “very active” as officers look for a second suspect. It’s an “ongoing situation.”
Update at 1:45 p.m.: Jed Young, a spokesman for Lone Star College tells CNN that the shooting appeared to be “between two individuals.”
One of the shooters was wounded and taken into custody, and the other fled the campus. He could not say whether they were students.
Young said two students were wounded when they were caught in the crossfire. Reports indicate they were shot in the leg.
Young said the danger has been mitigated and the “situation is under control.”
Update at 1:28 p.m.: Various TV reports from Houston say that witnesses on campus saw a gunman running from the library into an administration building across from the library. And all say they heard five to six shots fired. Students nearby were told to stay put for about half an hour, then let go; they ran as fast as they could from campus. Some reports say a “person of interest” is in custody, though nothing has been confirmed by law enforcement officials.
KHOU, meanwhile, is reporting that one of two possible gunmen has been taken into custody: “KHOU 11 News stringer Lloyd Overcash saw one male being brought out of the library on a stretcher. He was reportedly handcuffed to the stretcher, according to witnesses.”
Witnesses have told TV reporters in Houston that they only heard of the shooting via word-of-mouth reports from fellow classmates. Some teachers have said they did receive warnings via their cellphones.
The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. at the campus near Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The Lone Star College website remains hard to access, and still says only: “Important Notice! ALERT: LSC-North Harris – Shelter in Place. LSC-North Harris is under a shelter in place. Students, Faculty and Staff are advised to take immediate shelter where you are.” That was posted at 12:47 p.m.
Update at 1:16 p.m.: People are being allowed to leave the heavily wooded campus, which is surrounded by officers with weapons drawn. ABC 13 in Houston is reporting that two victim have been taken by ambulance to Ben Taub Hospital, where they were awake and alert; they’re both heading to surgery. Word is officers are looking for a man in an Atlanta Falcons shirt, last seen running through campus to the wooded area on the north side of campus.
Update at 1:10 p.m. Authorities now say at least three people, including a suspect, have been shot and that they are looking for a second suspect, KHOU-TV reports.
Update at 1:02 p.m. KHOU now reports that Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables said at least two people have been shot. Also, several Aldine ISD schools near the college campus have been placed on lockdown while authorities search for a suspect.
Original post at 12:55 p.m. There are unconfirmed reports that at least three people have been wounded in a shooting at the Lone Star College North Harris Campus in Houston, KHOU-TV reports.
The station reports that “several” emergency crews are on the scene and that at least one person was receiving treatment from emergency personnel outside the library when the station’s helicopter flew over the campus. KHOU is streaming live aerial footage on its website.
The station reports that campus officials confirmed that the school is on lockdown.
